Buttermilk Fried Chicken

Crispy buttermilk fried chicken, drizzled with honey butter in a toasted brioche bun with crispy lettuce, burger sauce, and of course pickles. Mouthwateringly delicious and I’m going to share with you exactly how to make it. This buttermilk fried recipe is very easy to make at home.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich
 

Equipment for this recipe

  • Deep Fryer 
  • Dutch Oven 
  • Measuring Cups 
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Jars

Ingredients

  • 3 tsp Paprika
  • 3 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Salt
  • Oil for Frying
  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • ¼ Honey
  • 4 Brioche Buns
  • Lettuce, Pickles, Sauce
  • 4 Chicken Thighs, Boneless
  • ½ Cup / 125ml Buttermilk
  • 3 Tbsp Hot Sauce (optional)
  • 1½ Cups / 190g Flour
  • 2 tsp White Pepper
  • ½ tsp Chilli Flakes

How to make a fried chicken sandwich

  • Take a small bowl and combine the chicken thighs, buttermilk & hot sauce if used. Cover it and place it in the fridge for up to 20-24 hours. 
  • In a medium-size bowl combine, garlic powder, paprika, chili flakes, flour, pepper, and salt.
  • Drain each piece of chicken and dredge it in the flour mixture until completely combined. 
  • Heat a large dutch oven or saucepan filled 2/3 full with flourless oil over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot fry the chicken in batches, 2-3 at a time for about 5-6 minutes or until a deep golden brown. 
  • Adjust the heat as needed if the chicken is going too much color or not enough. While the chicken is frying in a small saucepan add the honey and butter. Heat over medium heat until melted and combine together. 
  • Pour the honey butter into a small bowl and leave it to cool for  8-10 minutes before using. 
  • To make the sandwiches toast the brioche buns. Add a few tablespoons of sauce and top with a piece of buttermilk fried chicken. 
  • Drizzle over a tablespoon of the honey butter and top with shredded iceberg, pickles, and top of the burger. 
  1. You can also use chicken breast instead of chicken thigh. Cut them in a half 
  2. You can substitute buttermilk with unsweetened yogurt or milk with lemon juice or vinegar.
  • Yield: 4-5   Sandwich Prep time: 15 mins
  • Cook time: 5 mins Aditional time: 4 hrs   
  • Total time: 4 hrs 20 mins

FAQ’S

Is this recipe spicy?

The spice is very minimal but there is hot sauce and chili flakes in this recipe. If you don’t want any heat the hot sauce and chili can be left out and if you would like these super spicy extra chili flakes or powder can be used. 

Can we make the sandwiches in advance? 

The Chicken can be marinated then coated in the flour in advance. Keep it in the fridge until you are ready to serve.

History of fried chicken

According to Wikipedia  American-English version of fried chicken was created in the 1830s but before this, there is also a version in Scotland and the African region were present.
Fried Chicken simply refers to chicken that has been coated, usually in some type of flour and fried. There are so many different cultures around the world that embrace some type of fried chicken which just shows how delicious and well-loved it is.
