Cookies Recipe Red Velvet — These are soft and chewy, beautifully red with a white chocolate chip contrast, and delightfully sweet with undertones of vanilla and cocoa taste. It’s a delectable treat for folks of all ages!

Cookies with Red Velvet and White Chocolate Chips

With their gorgeous and festive red hue, red velvet cookies have to be one of the greatest Christmas or Valentine’s Day treats. Cookies Recipe Red Velvet!

These are simple cookies with basic ingredients that are sure to fulfill your red velvet desires!

These cookies combine two of my favorite desserts: red velvet cake and chocolate chip cookies.

You just can’t go wrong with these cookies! Simply traditional tastes and a delightful new spin on cookies.

It’s an easy weekend baking project; just don’t wear your nicest clothes with all that red. Make time to refrigerate the cookie dough as well (otherwise, cookies will spread too much). Cookies Recipe Red Velvet!

Ingredients for Red Velvet Cookies

  • All-purpose flour can be bleached or unbleached. Unbleached spreads somewhat less and yields softer biscuits, but unbleached flour yields slightly chewier cookies.
  • Cocoa powder: Dutch process cocoa powder is too dark for this recipe.
  • Baking soda: Add 1/4 teaspoon baking powder to the baking soda if you want puffier cookies.

  • If you only have salted butter on hand, you can substitute it here. Add 1/8 teaspoon salt to the mixture.
  • Granulated sugar and brown sugar: The combination makes the cookies delightfully sweet, and the brown sugar softens them.
  • Egg: This helps to bind the ingredients and makes the biscuit softer.
  • Red food coloring: I used both the gel and liquid food coloring to make them. Gel appears to perform somewhat better because it is less liquidy, but it is more difficult to locate in most food shops, so I’ve given alternatives for both. You may use beet powder or a natural gel color, but the color will be less bright.
  • Vanilla bean paste is an alternative to vanilla extract.
  • Vinegar: Plain white vinegar is used here (similar to the original red velvet cake), but lemon juice also works nicely. It simply enhances the taste.
  • White chocolate chips: I enjoy the lovely contrast of white chocolate chips, but semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips will also work nicely for a stronger chocolate flavor.

Making Red Velvet Cookies

  1. Set aside the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a mixing dish.
  2. Cream together butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment until incorporated. Cookies Recipe Red Velvet!
  3. Mix in the egg. Mix in the red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
  4. Mix in the flour mixture just until incorporated.
  5. 3/4 cup white or semi-sweet chocolate chips (save the remaining 1/3 cup for after baking)
  6. Cover and refrigerate the dough for 1–2 hours, or until nearly hard. Preheat the oven to 350°F near the conclusion of the chilling process.
  7. Scoop out the dough and roll it into 1 1/2 tablespoon balls (or 28g). Place 2 inches apart on a baking sheet coated with parchment paper.
  8. Bake one sheet at a time for 10 – 11 minutes, or until cookies seem firm on the edges but slightly underbaked in the center (keep remaining dough refrigerated and repeat the process).
  9. Remove from the oven and carefully press some of the remaining white chocolate chips into the tops of the cookies.
  10. Allow cooling for 5 minutes on the baking sheet before transferring it to a wire rack to cool. Cookies Recipe Red Velvet!

Shelf Life and Storage

  • Store cookies in an airtight container (I even put them in the container before they’re entirely cold to capture some of the steam and moisture).
  • Add a couple of slices of bread to the storage container or put flour tortillas over top to help keep cookies soft. Cookies Recipe Red Velvet!
  • These cookies are best eaten within 2 days of making them.
  • I do not advocate freezing cookies since they will turn dry.

Variations

  • Instead of mixing in white chocolate chips, dip one-half of the cookies in melted white chocolate or pour it over the top. Cookies Recipe Red Velvet!
  • For a little kick, add 1 teaspoon of lemon zest.
  • You may use either milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips.
  • For a richer chocolate taste, replace 1 tablespoon of the flour with 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Just bear in mind that the cookies will not be as red.
  • Instead of white chocolate chips, top the cookies with a cream cheese icing.

Obviously, these are inspired by my NYC Chocolate Chip Cookies and Triple Chocolate NYC Cookies. These two recipes are AMAZING, and I’m amazed at how many of you have already cooked them.

The trouble is, since releasing these, I’ve received several requests for additional variants, with these being by far the most popular. Cookies are made with red velvet. Of course, I was delighted to oblige. Partly due to the fact that I’d already created them! Cookies Recipe Red Velvet!

These weren’t supposed to be shared for a while because I prefer to spread out my recipes and have some variety… but here we are. I enjoy giving you what you desire! These are gooey, packed with white chocolate chips, and have a delicious Red Velvet flavor!

If you’re wondering what Red Velvet is, it’s a combination of chocolate and vanilla – plus red. The red color is often created by combining red food coloring, vinegar, and buttermilk.
