This is the simplest sugar cookie frosting recipe I’ve ever made. It contains the following items: Frosting
Butter: Depending on your flavor preferences, you can use salted or unsalted butter. It must be warmed to room temperature.
Vegetable shortening: This creates a “crust” that allows you to stack your iced sugar cookies without them sticking together. If you don’t mind, simply replace it with an equivalent amount of butter to make a genuine buttercream frosting.
Powdered sugar: This recipe calls for powdered sugar (also known as confectioners’ sugar and icing sugar). Use granulated white sugar instead.
Whole milk is used to thin out the icing. I recommend full milk or 2% milk. Skim milk is OK, but it will make a thinner product, necessitating the use of additional powdered sugar.
Vanilla extract: For taste and to provide that extra something to baked products.
Almond extract: This adds a slight cherry taste to the frosting, giving it an unexpected wow factor. It’s what puts this frosting recipe over the top for me. However, you may leave it out without affecting the consistency of the frosting.
Optional food coloring: If you wish to color your frosting, mix in a few drops of food color. Baby showers, athletic events, holidays, and parties are all great places to have fun.
