Glaze Icing vs. Royal Icing
Royal icing, which is formed of either pasteurized raw egg whites, egg white powder, or meringue powder, is commonly used to adorn sugar cookies. It not only holds its form well once piped, but it also generates the smoothest, most even, and blemish-free flawless hard coating with a matte finish. Royal icing is difficult to surpass for accuracy and more elaborate decorations. However, the components must be obtained online or from specialist merchants, achieving the desired consistency might take some expertise, and the liquid rapidly begins to dry when exposed to air. Glaze icing, which dries lustrous, is significantly easier and less time-consuming than royal icing. - Powdered sugar: This recipe calls for icing sugar (also called confectioners’ sugar and icing sugar). Use powdered white sugar alternatively. Sifting the powdered sugar is actually recommended to eliminate lumps and produce a smoother icing.
- Whole milk is used to thin out the frosting. I recommend full milk or 2% milk. For this dish, avoid using skim milk or milk replacements.
- Light corn syrup: This aids in the hardening of the icing and gives it its bright sheen!
- For taste, use vanilla extract. Use clear vanilla essence if you want your icing to be dazzling white.
- Pinch of salt: A pinch of salt amplifies all of the other tastes, but it is entirely optional.
Making Sugar Cookie Icing:
Simply combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl until smooth and blended. If the frosting is too thick, add a tablespoon of milk at a time until the icing is thick yet pipeable. If it’s too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar until the ideal texture is achieved. How to Make Colored Icing
After combining the ingredients, you’ll have white icing. Note: If you want it to be dazzling white, use clear vanilla extract instead of normal vanilla, which is dark and will give your icing a beige undertone.
Simply mix in a few drops of colored food dye until the correct color is achieved if you wish to tint your icing (keeping in mind that the color will deepen as it dries.) We chose food gel over liquid dye because the coloring chemical in gel produces a more bright color, requires less of it, and does not dilute the icing significantly. However, both work.
How to Make Sugar Cookie Icing
Simply soak the tops of sugar cookies in the mixture to decorate with icing. If you want something a little more refined, you have a few options: Icing Sugar Cookies!
- Option 1: Spoon frosting into a transparent plastic disposable piping bag fitted with a piping tip (I usually grab my Wilton 5.)
- 2nd Option: Place the frosting in a Ziploc bag and snip a little portion of the corner off (if the icing is too thick, it will split the bag’s seam while squeezing.)
- Option 3: Do you have a squeeze bottle? These make decorating a breeze.
Once your frosting is ready to pipe, use it to outline the border of each cookie, then “flood” the inner region of the cookie with extra icing. Using a toothpick, push the icing around to coat the whole surface of the cookie. If you see any little bubbles, simply burst them with the toothpick. (Watch the video below for visual assistance.)
Sugar Cookie Decorating Icing Ideas:
- Fill the whole surface of the cookie with a solid color.
- Flood the whole surface of the cookies, then top with sprinkles, sanding sugar, or little candies.
- A solid coating of white icing, followed by a layer of colorful icing in a polka dot or striped design.
- Make dots with a contrasting color on a solid white or colored surface, then drag a toothpick through the dots to form hearts.

How Long Does Glaze Take to Harden?
You can eat the glazed cookies immediately or wait until the frosting hardens. This glaze hardens rapidly, but it might take anywhere from 3 hours to overnight at room temperature to fully solidify. Icing Sugar Cookies
This simple Sugar Cookie Icing recipe comes together quickly and dries hard, allowing you to stack or bag your beautifully adorned cookies!
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the sugar, 3 tablespoons of milk, corn syrup, and vanilla.
- (If the icing is too thick, add another tablespoon of milk until it is thick yet pipeable.)
- If the mixture is too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar until the required texture is achieved.
- Drizzle a little frosting with a whisk to create a ribbon of icing that will hold for a few seconds before melting back into the icing.
- That is when you know it has reached the proper consistency and is ready to use.)
- If you want to tint the frosting in different colors, split it into bowls now and color as desired.
- Fill a piping bag with frosting and a piping tip (I use Wilton 5.)
- Decorate the cookies as desired with icing. (If using sanding sugar or sprinkles, apply them before the icing begins to solidify.)
- Allow the frosting to firm completely at room temperature before serving (this can take anywhere from 3 hours to overnight depending on the consistency and thickness of your icing.)
