I set out to develop the ideal pumpkin and cinnamon pie recipes during the previous Christmas season.
But this year, Derby Pie has entirely consumed my life.
What Makes This A Derby Pie?
In essence, a traditional derby pie recipe is a nut pie with chocolate chips added. Typically, either pecans or walnuts are used to make the filling. It hardens into a sticky coating after baking.
As the chocolate chips settle to the bottom, a layer of molten chocolate forms underneath the nuts. Southern sweetness at its finest.

Ingredients for Kentucky Derby Pie
- USE HOMEMADE PIE CRUST OR REFRIGERATED ROLL-OUT FOR THE BOURBON DERBY PIE. Added Brown Sugar to Dough (you can use all-purpose flour)
- massive eggs
- Whiskey Stick Butter Bourbon
- Salt Vanilla Extract
- Chips of dark chocolate
- Chopped Pecans or Walnuts roughly
- WHIPPED CREAM WITH SALTED CARAMEL:
- Cream Heavy
- Sauce Salted Caramel (and some extra for the top)
How To Make Derby Pie
- Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit to make the pie crust. A circle of dough three inches wider than your pie plate should be rolled out. Roll out the crust, then gently transfer it to the pan and press it into the bottom. Place the pie crust in the refrigerator after crimping the edge.
- Prepare the Filling In a sizable basin, combine the brown sugar, flour, eggs, butter, bourbon, vanilla, and salt. Stir in the chocolate chips and chopped pecans after the batter has been thoroughly mixed.
- Fill the pie – After the crust has completely cooled, pour in the filling and smooth it out evenly.
- Pie baking: Put the pie on
Prepare the Whipped Cream: When the pie is ready to be served, use an electric or stand mixer to whisk the heavy cream into firm peaks. Then, add a small amount of caramel sauce while still maintaining the air in the whipped cream. Spread the whipped cream until it is evenly distributed over the pie. Before cutting the pie to serve, finish it off by pouring some salted caramel sauce over the top.
NOTICE: Without the whipped cream garnish, the Bourbon Derby Pie can be left out at room temperature for up to four days. Cover it completely. Warm or ambient temperatures are better for the texture. Whipped cream should only be added the day before serving.
