He drives them to every social gathering they attend. Down there, on the other hand, he can purchase these enormous raisins from Trader Joe’s, which makes all the difference in the world. I honestly don’t think there is a better oatmeal cookie recipe than the disappearing oatmeal cookie recipe. I’m not sure how long it’s been in operation, but I’d say at least 60 years. It might be more; there are advertisements for oatmeal dating back to 1905, thus the recipe could have been developed at any time after that! No one cooks them better than my father. I created them at his place, but they aren’t as wonderful as his. He has a talent for slightly underbaking them so that they are just the proper amount of chewy. Avoid overbaking these at all costs! I know you can make crispy oatmeal raisin cookies, but they taste so much better soft, and chewy.

Serving Tips:

Press dough onto the bottom of an oiled 13 x 9-inch baking pan. 30–35 minutes, or until light golden brown Allow to cool entirely in the pan on a wire rack. Make into bars. Keep securely covered. BARS 24

Variations:

Amelia asked me a few weeks ago what recipe I used to bake Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. I instructed her to just follow the recipe on the Quaker Oats lid. Why mess with perfection when it’s a tasty chewy cookie? She remarked that the recipe on the lid was awful. Hmmm? That’s strange.

I instantly emailed her a photo of the recipe from the back of my Quaker Oats lid. “Don’t lose that recipe!” she said. It turned out that the formula on her Quaker Oats lid was not the same as mine. I believe the recipe we all enjoyed has evolved over time. (I’ve been dragging this recipe about for almost 20 years.) So I present to you the original recipe.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a large mixing basin, cream together the butter and sugars with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large mixing basin, cream together the butter and sugars until smooth.
  3. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a medium mixing basin, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Add to the butter mixture and well combine.
  6. Incorporate the oats and raisins by hand.
  7. Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  8. 8–10 minutes, or until light golden brown
  9. Cool the cookies for 2-3 minutes on the cookie sheets before transferring them to a wire rack.
  10. They will break apart if you move them too quickly!
  11. Allow them to cool fully. If they endure that long (they won’t), keep them well covered.
